Viking Longhouse

While up in Unst the other day I swung along the Viking Longhouse which is currently being constructed up there. I was the Structural Engineer who sized the timbers which make up the frame of the building - it was quite a challenge I can assure you! Modern homes are constructed using standard lengths of timber, which come in standard sizes, and are all fully stamped with their strength grade. Clearly the logs used on this project were anything but standard!!
